This time of year is always fun. The weather is starting to get warmer, and animals are returning home and starting to wake up and it is time for the annual festival at the Schells Brewery down in New Ulm Minnesota. For $10 a ticket of admission, you get a afternoon of beer drinking, live polka music, bonfires, people watching, brat eating fun!
We have the day pretty streamlined. A big yellow school bus picks us up in Jordan and the day trip begins. Typically there is only one stop. A small bar down in Niccolet that is our tradition to hit every year first. When we got there in fact, the bar tender was already prepping our shots! If you look closely, that is 38 shot glasses. 38 shots of a Jane’s Addiction is about $120!
This might of been some of the nicest weather we have ever seen for this event. A little wind was no big deal, and the mud from the melting was manageable. I have been to this event when your beer froze in your glass as soon as it was poured, so it was a nice change!
If you get a chance to make it down to the Schells Brewery, it is a amazing place. Old brick buildings nestled into the bluffs of New Ulm. Peacocks and Deer and running around the property although the peacocks have way more free reign over the place. Plus, the beer is pretty good and the people of New Ulm are awesome! Can’t wait for next year!
That’s a lot of people standing in the woods drinking beer. And you’re right about that wicked wind.
I love the setting of Schells, just as you describe it. You feel almost like you’re in another country. And the beer is pretty darned good, too. New Ulm rates as one of my favorite Minnesota communities.
I’m glad you and your party were responsible party-goers. We saw a party bus heading toward Mankato on our return trip from Redwood County.

New Ulm – that brings back memories of going to school there, (MLA) It was cold!! and the snow is amazing. I was too young to drink beer, even with the low drinking age at the time… btw, thanks for liking my post on my upcoming concert in Tucson.

Unsurprisingly there is a Neu Ulm in Bavaria and maybe even less so, there’s a good brewery there.
