Rockin Thanksgiving Day Holiday Turducken W/ Bacon

So, every year we do a Friendship Thanksgiving Dinner involving predominantly our Rennasaince Festival family. Every year the food is pretty great. Pot luck situation where everyone brings their typical Thanksgiving side. When it came to the bird, we decided it was time to finally make one of the legendary Turducken.

Now, I always assumed that you just shoved the duck inside the chicken and then the chicken inside of the turkey. Duck –> 🐔—> 🦃. After a little research, I found out I was completely wrong. Turns out I needed to de bone all the birds. Fun process (sarcasm). Super gross. I’ll let Youtube show you how to do it if you ever want to try. My tip, go slow and use a sharp knife!

So, we get the birds done and you start by laying the boneless turkey flat. Pack in some stuffing (I used cooked Stovetop Stuffing) and sprinkle seasoning across the turkey.

Next, take your boneless chicken. I kinda butchered the chicken trying to take the bones out, so it ended up really just be the breasts and thighs. If i did another one, I think i would just use boneless chicken breast and skip the de boning hassle. Lay it flat across the turkey, add some more stuffing (I made 2 standard boxes and used it all throughout) and sprinkle with seasoning.

Next the duck. This one de boned pretty nicely, but there was so much fat, we trimned it down and kinda went the same way as the chicken. Lay it flat on the top, use the rest of your stuffing, sprinkle with seasoning.

I went and bought a meat sewing needle and baking twine on Amazon. About a $15 investment. Take the twine, thread the needle, and grab the side of your turkey. The goal is to tightly stitch it back up. Make sure your stitches are close and tight. Once you have it stitched up, go ahead and pre heat your oven for 375 degrees.

We rubbed the turkey with some butter, sprinkled with seasoning and into the oven it went. Everything i read said it should cook for 1/2 per pound at 375 degrees. Ours should of taken about 7 hours, but realistically it was ready in about 4. Since we werent eating for about 4 more hours and i didn’t want it to dry out on the counter, we decided to make a bacon weave. We still need a new name for this creation!

I used 3 packages of bacon and did 2 seperate weaves. We turned the oven down to 275 degrees, wrapped the weaves over the turkey and put it back in. With about 20 minutes to go, we sprinkled it with some brown sugar.

We pulled it, let it cool and settle on the counter for about 30 minutes and then just sliced it like a meatloaf! It feel apart but didn’t change the fact that it was amazing! You could slice all 3 birds with a fork with ease! I will definitely be trying this again!

I didn’t take any pictures of making the Turducken because i was watching how to videos as i was doing it!

    Oooh… I regularly weave bacon over our turkey, but I’ve never thought to add brown sugar!

    So in the end, it was worth all the work of deboning everything? It looks amazing!
